The city sits virtually in the center of the state and oozes with charm and sophistication. Raleigh has a fair amount of history and is known for its tree-lined streets and historic neighborhoods and districts, including the irresistible Historic Oakwood.

The city proper, including everything of interest to the average visitor, lies within the I-440 ring road, with the downtown district located in the center. Downtown possesses most of the city's treasures and the shopping, dining and nightlife opportunities here are superb.

Downtown District

Downtown Raleigh is loaded with attractions and a profusion of iconic government landmark buildings, museums and historic sights. This is where many visitors spend their time when visiting the city, with most of the area being easy to explore on foot. You can cover the majority of the major attractions in a day and those visitors who don't fancy walking can make use of the Raleigh Trolley.

Glenwood South

Glenwood South is an up-and-coming part of downtown that is well worth a look if you have the time. The area has largely been renovated and there are numerous smart shops and restaurants lining the once boring and non-descript streets.

Historic Oakwood

A perfectly preserved slice of Victorian America, the Historic Oakwood district is the number one area in Raleigh for the historian. Oakwood is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is the largest and most comprehensive historic district in the city, covering 20 blocks. The homes here were constructed between 1870 and 1912, and the focus of the area is the historic Oakwood Cemetery, situated next to Oakwood Park.

Cameron Village

Cameron Village is a 1950s district of Raleigh to the north of downtown, known for its ranch-style homes and excellent shopping. The popular Cameron Village Shopping Center has been here as long as the village itself and is complemented by a plethora of trendy boutiques and some wonderful eateries.

Warehouse District

The Warehouse district is another up-and-coming area of downtown Raleigh, complete with converted warehouses and some top nightspots. This area is best visited at night, when the flashy restaurants, bars and nightclubs quickly come to life.
