Devotees of the infamous Harley Davidson should not miss the company's only manufacturing plant west of the Mississippi. Free walking tours through Kansas City's Harley Davidson Assembly Plant factory are provided on weekdays, taking roughly an hour and guiding visitors through the basic assembly process of these mean machines.

Kansas City Zoo

Kansas City's 200-acre / 80-hectare zoo area has been skillfully constructed to represent the original habitats of its diverse collection of animals. African grasslands, American plains and the Australian outback are all featured at this outstanding complex, which was recently refurbished and now houses over 1,500 animals. Other attractions at Kansas City Zoo include an IMAX theater and two sizable walk-through aviaries. The zoo also actively participates in over 20 Species Survival Plans, an inter-zoo project designed to facilitate the genetic diversity of animal species.

Quindaro Ruins

Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002, Quindaro was once a thriving abolitionist town where African-American slaves were given their freedom. Now little more than a ghost town, Kansas City's Quindaro is nevertheless still well worth visiting for its fascinating historical legacy and attractions, old buildings, spring-fed streams and prolific flora and fauna.

Union Station

Originally opened as a major rail transport hub, this early 19th-century building was refurbished in 1996 after standing empty and obsolete for roughly a decade. Today it is arguably Kansas City's premier tourist attraction, boasting superbly restored Beaux Arts architecture, a multi-million dollar science museum, 3D movie screen, live performance theater, restaurants and shops. The KC Rail experience takes visitors on a train trip through Kansas City history, while regular Amtrak services are still available from the terminal.
