Built following the 1951 Great Flood, Kansas City's international airport is located just 18 miles / 29 km to the northwest of the downtown district, where it features three runways and serves both international and domestic flights. This is one of the largest airports in America and it comes with many modern facilities. Of note, nearby highways include both Interstate I-29 and Interstate I-435.
Terminals
The airport is home to three large terminal buildings, serving a number of important airlines.
- Terminal A - domestic airlines, gates 1 to 20
- Terminal B - domestic airlines, gates 26 to 40
- Terminal C - domestic airlines, gates 51 to 64

Kansas City Airport is served by numerous public Metro buses, traveling at regular intervals throughout the day (Monday to Friday) from outside of the terminals. Bus travel is one of the cheapest methods of ground transportation available here, with fares payable in cash. Monthly bus passes are available for those planning to use this service extensively.
Shuttle Buses
Shuttle buses are becoming an increasingly popular method of ground transportation at Kansas City Airport and travel to more than 60 destinations within Missouri. The shuttle buses are operated by companies such as Aero Express, Best Express, Five Guys, KCI Roadrunner Express, Quicksilver, Rick's Express, Roundabout and Spirit Shuttles. They can be found outside of the terminals, where they depart at regular intervals, roughly eight times each day.

Taxis are plentiful onsite and courtesy telephones are situated both inside and outside of each terminal, next to the main luggage reclaim areas. The journey from Kansas City Airport into the nearby city center will last approximately 35 minutes, when traffic conditions are reasonable. Official taxis should always be used and drivers are happy for you to share your journey and fare with other passengers, if you so wish.
