Shopping is a very popular pastime with holiday makers staying on Kauai and looking for the ultimate souvenir, which can including everything from dolls of 'hula' girls and floral guitars, to beach wear, jewellery and 'lei' necklaces, made with colourful artificial flowers.

Most shops on Kauai are open seven days a week, staying open until early evening from Monday through Saturday, while the shopping hours are noticeably reduced on Sundays.

Where to Shop

The shopping scene around Kauai's easterly town of Kappa is especially good, and a good selection of stores are spread around this part of the island, along the Coconut Coast. Both the Kauai Village Shopping Center and the Waipouli Center are home to excellent shopping opportunities and located on the Kuhio Highway, as is the nearby Coconut Marketplace, where you will find cinemas and plenty of places to eat.

On the northerly shore of Kauai, the shopping around the small village Hanalei is also surprisingly good and very traditional, with the most popular options including the Ching Young Village, and also the Hanalei Dolphin Center, which is actually housed within a former school and next to the Kuhio Highway.

Around Lihue and Kalapaki are many trendy stores and interesting art galleries, selling an eclectic mixture of holiday gifts, ranging from Kauai woodwork and crafts, to 'lauhala' weavings and ornaments made out of coconuts. The Kukui Grove Center is home to a particularly convenient cluster of shops, including a branch of the noteworthy Liberty House department store, being of the Kaumualii Highway. On the south shore, the Poipu Shopping Village is hard to beat and easy to find, being sited on the Kiahuna Plantation Drive, while the Anchor Cove Shopping Center next to Lihue's Nawiliwili Harbor and the Kalapaki Bay is a very worthwhile destination for shoppers.
