Located in northwest Florida, at the top of the Florida panhandle, Panama City is well served by air transport and road, with a new international airport. Travel into Panama City is made easy by the convenient Highway 231, which meets with the east-west I-10.

Although no trains travel to Panama City, there is a rail station at nearby Chipley, while Greyhound buses travel into the city on a regular basis. For transport within Panama City Beach, the Bay Town Trolley provides a regular service.


Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport (ECP) / Arriving by Air

Opened as recently as 2010 as a replacement for the now-closed Panama City-Bay County International Airport, the Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport lies just off State Highway US-388, in West Bay. Being so new, the facilities here are gleaming and modern, with good parking and car rental travel services. This facility receives numerous daily flights with major US carriers, such as Delta and Southwest Airlines. Onward destinations include Atlanta, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Houston, Memphis, Nashville and Orlando.

Car Rental

You will find offices of most of the major car rental travel companies at Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport (Alamo, Avis, Budget, Hertz, National, Enterprise and Thrifty) and in the city itself. If you are driving from farther afield, I-10 runs east-west to the north of town, with Highway 23 running south from exit 130. Those coming to Panama City from the New York direction should head through Atlanta and Columbus.

Buses and Coaches

Greyhound Lines coaches offer the cheapest form of travel to Panama City from centers across the US, although long journeys can be uncomfortable. Within the town, the Bay Town Trolley runs along Thomas Drive and Front Beach Road from Monday through to Friday, and rates are very reasonable.

Trains

There is no rail transport available in Panama City, although the transcontinental Sunset Limited service makes regular stops at the town of Chipley, which is situated 45 miles / 72 km north of town.

Taxis

Yellow Cab of Northwest Florida is the most prominent taxi firm in the city, with reasonable rates from the airport to the city and the beach. Taxis charge standard rates within Panama City Beach and per-mile rates around the city.
