Key West has been a haven for artists and writers for many years and as a result there are more than 50 art galleries in Key West, with works of art from every category. You will find various local works in Key West, as well as international pieces by renowned artists from every corner of the globe. Cuban, Haitian and Caribbean art is all particularly popular here.

Art lovers are strongly advised to pay a visit to the Key West Museum of Art and History on Front Street, which occupies the distinctive Old Post Office and Customs House and features art works and other interesting exhibits, including a host of Ernest Hemingway memorabilia. The Gingerbread Square Gallery on Duval Street is another reliable exhibition venue and is housed within a charming Victorian building, where it is surrounded by tropical foliage.

Built as a customs house in the early 1820s, when Key West was designated a US port of entry, this Romanesque-style red-brick building has recently undergone an extensive restoration program and today houses a museum. The main gallery in the Key West Museum of Art and History features rotating exhibits, while the smaller galleries have both permanent and temporary exhibits relating to the history of the city.

Gingerbread Square Gallery (GSG)

Reputed to be one of the oldest art galleries in Key West, the Gingerbread Square Gallery is also one of the most loved. It was founded in 1974 and contains a huge range of works by many renowned artists. You will find paintings, sculptures, art glass and graphics by the likes of Sadowski, Salem, Salinero, Steve Walker and Palmer. Many good cafes and refreshments stand close by, should you be in need of refreshment.

Joy Gallery
