For those spending time in Riverside and looking to immerse themselves in the city's cultural scene, a visit to at least a few of the extremely plentiful museums and galleries is most certainly in order. The choice of cultural attractions in the city is surprisingly extensive and most subject matters are covered in great detail, with local history being the main theme on offer at the Mission Inn Museum on Main Street.

Located on Mission Inn Avenue and on the northern side of the city, just off the freeway (Interstate I-215) is the ever-popular Riverside Metropolitan Museum. Here you will find exhibits covering topics such as history, anthropology, natural science and militaria, with collections being made up of more than 100,000 artifacts in total. Allow roughly an hour for a visit to the Riverside Metropolitan Museum, and although admission is free, nominal donations are suggested upon entry.

Just down the road and also standing on Mission Inn Avenue is the Riverside Art Museum, which was established here in the year 1967. The building itself dates back to the late 1920s and was originally called home by the city's Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA). On average, some 20 different exhibitions are staged at this gallery each year, being of both a traditional and modern nature, and including the works of students from the city's University of California, Riverside.


Art enthusiasts will also likely appreciate a visit to the university's very own UCR Culver Center for the Arts, where the Sweeney Gallery and the UCR California Museum of Photography are the principal draw cards.
