Located within the southern portion of California and next to the Santa Ana River, just over an hour's drive to the east of Los Angeles, the city of Riverside sits close to both the Moreno Valley and San Bernardino.

Maps show how the city is part of the expansive Inland Empire metropolitan region, as well as residing within the Greater Los Angeles area, and with a population of more than 310,000 people, it is the 12th-biggest of all the cities in California. It also just makes it into the top 60 most-populous cities in the United States.

Also belonging to Riverside County, the city functions as the county seat and is home to the spreading campus of the University of California, Riverside. More than 20,000 students are currently educated at this prestigious university, which was founded in 1954.
