Riverside Landmarks and Monuments

(Riverside, California - CA, USA)

There are a number of important and imposing historical structures standing in Riverside, with the Mission Inn Hotel being one of the most famous. Construction of the Mission Inn commenced in the year 1902 and was finally completed in its entirety in 1932, with its Mission Revival Style architecture remaining well preserved.

Another important historic building in the city is the Riverside County Historic Courthouse on Main Street, which boasts a Beaux-Arts style facade and dates back to the beginning of the 20th century. Also standing on Main Street is the City Hall, while just a few blocks away is the city's Public Library, home to the third-biggest collection of books in the whole of Southwestern USA.

Just a short walk away from the Riverside Public Library is the Harada House on Lemon Street. This historical residence was built in 1884 and became a National Historic Landmark at the beginning of the 1990s. Of interest, the Harada House is best remembered for its part in a famous legal trial over ownership and property rights in 1916.

The northern side of Riverside is rather dominated by a huge natural landmark, namely that of Mount Rubidoux. Located within the aptly named Mount Rubidoux Park, this mountainous hillside is something of a local attraction and each year on Independence Day, crowds gather to watch the Fourth of July fireworks launched from the very top.

Something rather more quirky and hugely important in the history of citrus farming is the city's Original Navel Orange Tree, which is actually the parent of all the world's navel oranges and is said to have started its life way back in the early years of the 1870s.
