Although situated in the middle of the desert, Phoenix and the Valley of the Sun are relatively green and leafy thanks to extensive irrigation. A number of parks and gardens can be found throughout the metropolitan area of Phoenix.

It is only a short drive to the larger and untouched mountain and desert parks on the outskirts of the city, which are extremely popular for hiking, mountain bike riding, horseback riding and whitewater rafting on the Upper Salt River.
