The Phoenix metropolitan area offers a surprisingly broad range of art galleries and supports a burgeoning arts community concentrated in places such as Carefree, Cave Creek, Scottsdale and Tempe. Downtown Phoenix is home to several reputable galleries and art-related museums, while numerous public and private buildings are noted for their striking architectural qualities.

The Phoenix Art Museum stands out in particular and has origins as far back as 1912, moving to its present building in 1959 and now designated as a local 'Point of Pride'. In 2006, the addition of a spacious modern art wing provided further much-needed gallery space.

Although images of cowboys and the West tend to dominate, there's no shortage of variety, with art work from around the world well represented here, as well as high quality sculptures and fine art ceramics.

Opened in 1959, the Phoenix Art Museum is huge and displays works of art from around the world, including well-known American, Asian, European and Latin American art works. Highlights include the modern and contemporary exhibits and works by members of the Cowboy Artists of America.

Arizona State University Art Museum (ASU)

A small yet innovative gallery noted for its architecture, the Arizona State University Art Museum stands in nearby Tempe and is just over 11 miles / 18 km to the east, where it is home to popular temporary exhibitions, as well as collections of contemporary and Latin American art, outdoor sculptures and numerous prints. While you are here, be sure to visit the Ceramics Research Center and Gallery across the street, which is home to stunning fine art ceramics.

Deer Valley Rock Art Center

Deer Valley Rock Art Center is an outdoor gallery nestled in the Hedgepeth Hills and is definitely worth the trip to the northwest corner of the Valley of the Sun. Here you'll find an extensive collection of Native American petroglyphs, spread along a series of boulders and dating back 5,000 years. Binoculars are recommended and available for hire if necessary.

Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art

The Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art is a fun museum to visit, lying some 12 miles / 19 km to the east and boasting a generous number of rotating exhibitions, with all kinds of different art forms. Images of the West are dutifully displayed, along with modern and contemporary art, including abstract works.

Shemer Art Center
