Mesa Museums and Art Galleries

There are several very varied museums to explore in Mesa, concentrating on subject matters such as the city's heritage and the natural history of Arizona, as well as fine art.

Located within a fully refurbished and renovated grocery store from the 1950s is the i.d.e.a. Museum, a fine arts gallery that both exhibits and teaches through a series of formal lessons, workshops and summer camps. Visitors will find that the ArtZone and ArtVille galleries hold much of the interest, showcasing a series of exhibitions throughout the course of the year.

A leading visual and performing arts venue located within the downtown district, the Mesa Arts Center opened in the year 2005 at the cost of close to US$100 million. The center is home to a number of different exhibition spaces, including five galleries within the Contemporary Arts wing. Also onsite is the Ikeda Theater (1,600 seats) and the considerably smaller Farnsworth Studio Theater (just under 100 seats).


Families will enjoy visiting the Arizona Museum of Natural History, which resides within the city center and is to be found just down the road from the i.d.e.a. Museum (formerly named the Arizona Museum for Youth).

Visitors can enjoy a real assortment of natural history relics and anthropology artifacts, along with a giant skeleton of a Columbian mammoth, an indoor waterfall, native American art works exhibited at the Southwest Gallery, and a recreation of the southwest's famous Lost Dutchman's Gold Mine.
