Mesa Landmarks and Monuments

There are a number of old sites, buildings and landmarks spread around the city of Mesa, many of which now make an appearance on the National Register of Historic Places. These range from the Alhambra Hotel (1893) on South MacDonald Street and the Buckhorn Mineral Baths Motel (1939) on East Main Street, to the Tudor Revival-style Fitch Farm House (1934) on North Center Street and the Mount Calvary Baptist Church (1940) on East Broadway Avenue.

The Mesa Grande Archaeological Site is a particularly unusual and ancient historic landmark, situated off North Date Street and consisting of a prehistoric Hohokam mound, which has been excavated to reveal a substantial compound beneath.

Formerly named the Alma Ward Meeting House, the Landmark Restaurant stands on West Main Street, on the western side of downtown Mesa, where it started its life way back in the year 1908 as an attractive Mormon Church, complete with gable roof. The adjacent Extension Road actually once featured a canal, where local children often swam during the hot summer months. Today, this interesting historical building functions as a popular restaurant, being open seven days a week and serving up dishes such as chicken fried steak with homemade country gravy, old fashioned pot roast and stuffed meatloaf.


Rather more modern and still very much an important landmark is the Bank of America Tower, which was previously known as the Western Savings Building and is actually the only high-rise building in the whole of Mesa, which automatically makes it the tallest. The Bank of America Tower stands on the Financial Plaza and was built here in 1985, measuring in at just over 68 meters / 223 feet.
