Operating for close to a century, the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport is among the largest air facilities serving the state of Alabama. Formerly known as Birmingham Metropolitan Airport, it began servicing passengers in the early 1930s. Today, around three million passengers use the airport each year. Around 300 flights per day to more than 40 different cities are available.

This large gateway has one terminal, which sits besides an older terminal that is no longer in use. The in-use building has two levels, with the Departures area on the top floor and the Arrivals zone on the ground floor. The terminal was constructed in 1974, but has been renovated several times since.

Southwest Airlines flies from the city to a dozen destinations across North America. However, Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, American Eagle and United Express also fly to domestic destinations like Houston, New York and Detroit.

The Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport is located just 4.5 miles / 7 km to the northeast of downtown Birmingham. Travelers will find that the Mester Airport Highway connects to the I-20 interstate, which is the fastest way to reach the center of the city. The facility is encompassed by Eastlake, South Eastlake and North Eastlake. The town of Leeds is situated along the I-20, some 13 miles / 21 km from the terminal, while the Center Point township is about 9 miles / 14 km north, being just off the I-59 interstate.

Cars

Passengers can easily drive to and from the terminal, especially when coming from the center of Birmingham. Drivers can take the I-20 directly to the downtown area. However, drivers need to be aware that the airport sits off Exit 129. The I-20 is the largest roadway passing through Birmingham, but the I-59 can also be taken from the northern reaches of the city.

Buses

Shuttle buses are available from the airport, as are limousine services. Some shuttle services can be arranged online, such as the eShuttle service. Meteors Shuttle, Birmingham Door-to-Door and an express coach which travels to Atlanta Airport are provided. However, booking seats ahead of time is recommended.

Taxis

A number of taxi companies operate here. The taxi ranks of American Cab, Award Cab Company and Progress House Cabs, among others, are located on the ground level of the terminal, next to the baggage reclaim area. Of note, taxis are available both day and night.
