The Birmingham Botanical Gardens
Make sure you visit the Birmingham Botanical Gardens at Mount Brook. They are so lovely, all through the year, and it does not cost a dime. Spring is a nice time to stop by, when there is a lot of fresh color. There is a really good collection of paintings at the nearby Museum of Art.

Go to Vulcan Park on Valley View Drive
The real claim to fame in Vulcan Park is its massive iron statue, which is the biggest the world has ever seen. There are also some pleasant views across the city and a visitor center where you can learn all about the city's past and future plans.

The Animals of Birmingham Zoo
Birmingham Zoo is much like an other city zoo. There are about 800 animals here, including some rather big alligators. Other areas of interest include an African Savannah with giraffes, a tropical rain forest, and some colorful exotic birdies, which squawked very loudly when we went by. I think they liked the look of my ice cream!
