Green spaces are mainly based around the nearby Jasper National Park, one of the city's most notable attractions. Full of spectacular scenery and many wonderful natural features, the Jasper National Park is the biggest in the Canadian Rocky Mountains and covers a vast area, spanning almost 11,000 square kilometers / 4,245 square miles and being within easy reach of the townsite itself.

Within the park lie some truly awesome waterfalls, such as the Tangle Falls and the Sunwapta Falls.

One of the area's most outstanding natural wonders, many people travel to the townsite to specifically visit the park, which features extensive hiking trails and recreational activities. With more than 600 miles / 965 km of hiking and walking trails, together with numerous mountain drives, the park connects to the south along the Icefields Parkway.

The Jasper National Park is home to the tallest mountain in the province, Mount Columbia, which measures almost 3,800 meters / 12,465 feet, together with the Athabasca, North America's most easily accessible glacier. Famous for being part of the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage Site, the park gained national status in 1930 and contains around 70 indigenous mammals, including elk, deer, black bear and coyotes. Visitors will also be able to appreciate some of the most beautiful scenery in Canada, with extensive alpine meadows and Maligne Lake, the biggest glacial-fed lake in the Canadian Rocky Mountains.

Sunwapta Falls

One of the most spectacular waterfalls in the whole of Jasper National Park, the Sunwapta Falls roar into a deep canyon, creating a truly breathtaking spectacle. Standing between Jasper and the Columbia Icefield, the falls are a popular excursion from the townsite. Over the years, Sunwapta Falls has developed into a resort and now features a number of attractions, which include sightseeing tours, hiking, fishing, white-water rafting, horseback riding, art galleries and a range of accommodation. The Sunwapta Falls Resort is around 34 miles / 55 km from Jasper and can be easily reached in less than one hour.

Tangle Falls

The Tangle Falls stands to one side of the Tangle Ridge and are a spectacular series of cascading waterfalls. Offering endless photo opportunities, the Tangle Falls are situated around 60 miles / 97 km from Jasper. Nearby natural attractions include Mount Kitchener, which offers magnificent views of the Stutfield Glacier.
