Iquitos Weather, When to Go and Climate Information

Image of the Belen districtLying in the northernmost part of Peru and within the Amazon region, Iquitos offers visitors a particularly hot and humid climate, with year-round high temperatures and elevated levels of rainfall, which are considerably higher than other most southerly Peruvian destinations, such as Ayacucho, Cusco and Lima.

Iquitos experiences a noticeable wet season, which arrives in November and ends in May, with March and April tending to feature the wettest weather, seeing precipitation levels of around 300 mm / 11.8 inches and 280 mm / 11 inches respectively. In May, Iquitos sees the Amazon River reach its highest levels, steadily dropping some 9 metres / 30 feet or 12 metres / 40 feet to its lowest point in October, and then rising steadily thereafter.

Seasonal Climate Variations / When to Go

Whilst the dry season in Iquitos offers a very different climate, July and August still see some periods of heavy rain, despite being the driest months.

However, strong sunshine and fine weather is never usually too far behind and quick to dry things up, with temperatures reliably topping 30°C / 86°F and averaging 32°C / 90°F or more.
