Iquitos Hotels and Accommodation

(Iquitos, Loreto, Peru)

Plaza picture, taken in the city centreOffering a true taste of the northerly Amazon area of Peru, hotels in Iquitos are widespread and affordable, although you needn't be overly concerned about mosquitoes, since they rarely cause a problem here. Accommodation in Iquitos ranges from very basic lodging, right up to luxury five-star hotels, such as both the Victoria Regia on the Ricardo Palma, and the highly recommended El Dorado Plaza on the Napo, which overlooks the central Plaza de Armas and offers discounts at quiet times.

Of course, not only are views of the city centre desirable, but also of the Amazon River (Rio Amazonas) itself. A limited selection of riverfront accommodation lies along the Malecon Maldonado / Malecon Tarapaca, where the Read Hotel Iquitos is to be found. Bear in mind that hotels are at their most pricey during the high season, between May and September, and quickly fill up on Friday and Saturday nights.

Where to Stay

Most of the cheapest hotels and guesthouses in Iquitos do come complete with their own private bathrooms and fans, although it is always worth clarifying the available facilities at the time of booking, particularly the availability of hot water. Budget accommodation is always very popular with backpackers, such as the Hostal Libertad on the Arica, and also the Hostal Alfert on the Calle Garcia Sáenz, the latter of which is situated in the southerly neighbourhood of Belen, close to the Amazon River.

The next bracket of hotels in Iquitos may be slightly more expensive, but the accommodation provided is of a noticeably higher standard, with air conditioning in most guest rooms. Good choices include the Hostal Amazonas on the Plaza de Armas, the Doral Inn on the Raimondi, and also the Hotel Europa Iquitos on the Prospero, near to the Post Office, which features modern lodging spread over five floors and good city vistas.
