Belem Shopping and Districts

(Belem, Pará, Brazil)

Those planning a shopping trip in Belem have a number of different options available. These range from modern shopping malls with fashion boutiques and music stores, to bustling markets packed with character. Stores in the main malls generally open from Monday to Saturday between the hours of 10:00 to 22:00, and again on Sundays from 14:00 to 22:00.

Opened as recently as late 2009, the Boulevard Shopping Belem complex is amongst the city's leading malls and is to be found on the Avenida Visconde de Souza Franco. Home to some 250 different stores, the Boulevard mall contains a total of four enormous department stores, a large food court area and cinemas.

Where to Shop

Formerly known as Shopping Iguatemi, the mall now named Shopping Pátio Belem is one of the city's most established and dominates the Travessa Padre Eutiquio, within the Batista Campos neighbourhood. Shopping Pátio Belem comes with around 220 shops and five cinema screens, as well as a multi-storey car park.

Also very worthy of a mention is the Castanheira Shopping Center in the Castanheira neighbourhood, which stands next to the BR-316 highway, on the outskirts of Belem, and was the first mall to open its doors in this capital. Just over 150 stores are based here, together with cinemas and plenty of parking spaces.

Those looking for a shopping district rather than an actual mall should head to Belem's Comercio neighbourhood, which is to be found between the Campina and Cidade Velha area.

On the Avenida Castilho Franca, the Ver-o-Peso Market (Mercado Ver-o-Peso) is a particularly interesting place to spend your money in Belem, with almost everything imaginable for sale here at the 2,000+ stalls, ranging from Brazilian handicrafts and gifts, to clothing and local produce. There are no set hours at the Mercado Ver-o-Peso, with an array of stalls being open between 05:30 to 20:30.

Souvenir shopping in Belem is also in good supply at the Feira de Artesanato crafts fair on the Praca da Republica, where original art works are very popular.
