Hamilton Landmarks and Monuments

(Hamilton, Pembroke, Bermuda)

Front Street photoHamilton's landmarks include stately government buildings and churches that were built in the mid-19th century. The Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity with its observation tower is particularly prominent, and often referred to as simply the Bermuda Cathedral.

Opposite this, Fort Hamilton and the Sessions House are equally old and just as relevant. Most of the core landmarks are within walking distance of Front Street, except for outlying sights around Harrington Sound, which lies just a few miles to the north-east.

Surrounded by a moat and boasting a series of underground passages, this fortress dates from the 1870s, when the British built it to defend against American aggression. Fort Hamilton is a pleasant place to spend an early morning or late afternoon, as it features a forested garden in the old moat and is still outfitted with cannons and ramparts. None of these weapons were ever fired. For those less interested in the militaria aspect of the fortress, the hilltop views and the beautiful gardens will be sure to appeal. Between November and March, bagpipes are played here each Monday at midday.

It's much less of a mouthful to call this Anglican church the Bermuda Cathedral. Construction began in 1844 and the church was completed in 1869, although needed to be rebuilt less than 20 years later, after suffering fire damage.

Proper consecration followed in the early 20th century. The highlight of the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity is without doubt the church tower, which is open to visitors and offers spectacular views over the cityscape below.
Open hours: daily - 08:00 to 17:00

One of the older buildings in Bermuda, the Sessions House dates to the early 19th century.
