Gran Canaria Airport (LPA) Information

(Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain)

Photo of the mountains in Gran CanariaThe only air facility to be sited on the centrally situated Canary Island of Gran Canaria stands in the middle of its east coast. Gran Canaria Airport is often called Las Palmas Airport after the island's nearby capital and most populated city. This facility is Spain's fifth-busiest, with current annual passenger traffic figures exceeding 10.5 million visitors.

NASA chose this particular airport as an alternative space shuttle landing location because of its unusually long runways, although much smaller flying vessels frequently land here from mainland Spain, the rest of Europe and Western Africa. Gran Canaria Airport's five busiest European routes are Oslo, Amsterdam, Dusseldorf, Stockholm and Helsinki.

European Union flights enter Gran Canaria Airport via its two-floor single terminal through Zone A, while Zone B handles all flights from nations outside the European Union. Zone C is reserved for flights to other Canary Islands.

Cars and Taxis

Motorists can quickly reach anywhere they need to go on Gran Canaria from the airport along the GC-1, which is the main route leading north to Las Palmas and south to Gran Canaria's best known beach resorts. The southern portion of the GC-1 has been widened and renovated several times to accommodate Gran Canaria's growing number of visitors since the 1980s. Those looking for a taxi cab should note that fixed-fare taxis pick passengers up from outside all three zones.

Gran Canaria's affordable and efficient public bus network travels throughout the island and stops at most major communities. Airport passengers can board these buses at Zone A and Zone C's Arrivals halls. The fastest bus between Las Palmas and Maspalomas is bus number 50, while tourists will find that other popular bus routes travel to the Atlantico shopping centre and Avenida de Tirajana. The coastal bus journey to the island's lively holiday resort of Puerto Rico is especially scenic.
