Cordoba Shopping and Districts

(Cordoba, Andalucia, Spain)

Cordoba has plenty to offer the serious shopper, from large department stores and supermarkets to small speciality shops. In terms of souvenir shopping, this Andalucian city is perhaps best known for its silverware.

The city's artisan jewellery workshops are considered to turn out quality pieces. Likewise, its handcrafted leather work is renowned throughout the world. Ceramics, flamenco gear, ornate fans and any number of 'sombrero Cordobes' and guitars are also on sale in the city.

If you are around for the summer sales in Cordoba, you may be able to find a bargain or two. The sales run from July to August. In the winter, many goods are discounted from mid-January until the end of February.

When to Shop / Opening Hours

Cordoba's independent stores usually open from 09:00 to 13:30 and again from 16:30 to 20:00, from Monday to Saturday. Most of the larger shops and department stores stay open throughout the day and for a few hours extra in the evening. Likewise, during the busy summer months, shopping hours tend to be extended.

Where to Shop

The main area for shopping in Cordoba is around the Plaza de las Tendillas, with a particularly good selection of shops being found on the Conde de Gondomar, the Ronda de los Tejares and the Ronda de los Tejares. This is the main commercial area of the city and the best place to shop for clothes, accessories and so on. El Corte Inglés, that well-known Spanish department store, also has a branch in Cordoba.

Jewellery shops are largely concentrated in the Juderia district, as are most of the city's tourist shops. One of the largest leather workshops in Cordoba is Taller Meryan, a family run business that is a short walk from the north-eastern corner of the Mezquita. Locally-made ceramics can be found at Artesania Los Patios.

In days gone by, Cordoba's Souk, or Zoco, was a bustling Arabian market. Today, however, it is more a collection of artists' studios and shopping opportunities, where tourists can go to buy handcrafted goods. Around Christmas time, the Souk is transformed into a festive market. The Feria de las Pulgas is also a good source of locally made handcrafted goods and antiques.
