Bologna Restaurants and Dining

(Bologna, Emilia-Romagna, Italy)

Bologna RestaurantsBologna is without doubt the gastronomical capital of Italy, with some of the delicious food in the world. Eating and drinking are particularly important in Bologna and there is a rich culinary tradition. It is not unusual for people to travel many miles just to dine at a restaurant in Bologna and even the cheaper establishments usually offer outstanding food. Whether you head for a top restaurant or one of the Bologna's traditional late-night inns (osterie) you will not be disappointed.

Besides famous pasta dishes, Bologna is also known for some of the best pâtés in Italy and many culinary innovations. Locals in Bologna enjoy dining out and even on weeknights, you may find it hard to walk into restaurants in the city centre without booking first.

Lunch is usually served between 12:00 to 15:00 and in the evening many restaurants do not open until 20:00, closing at 23:00 or later, particularly in the summer. There are also many superb eateries outside of Bologna city centre, in the surrounding hills. These are easily reached by taxi or bus and often provide some truly spectacular views.

More recently, Bologna has been influenced by more international cuisine and as well as many traditional, Italian eateries, also has more ethnic restaurants than most Italian cities. These include Indian, Chinese, Greek and Middle Eastern cuisine.
