Dingle Museums and Art Galleries

(Dingle, County Kerry, Republic of Ireland)

Gallarus Oratory photoThere are only a handful of museums and galleries in Dingle, yet if you plan on seeing the peninsula you will likely come across many others. Most focus on art, with images of the Dingle Peninsula in particular being the main source of inspiration for watercolours and oils.

Greenlane Gallery is one of the main galleries in the town and showcases modern Irish art. The Mazzland Art Gallery is another local special, while the Corca Dhuibhne Regional Museum and the Gallarus Oratory are worthy museums to visit whilst on a trip around the peninsula.

The Gallarus Oratory stands close to the village of Gallarus, to the north of town, and is an ancient stone-built Christian church. Meaning 'Church of the Place of the Foreigners', there is doubt on the date of the mortarless building, with some saying it was erected between the 6th and 9th centuries, and others as late as the 12th. The church is tiny and lies amid stark surrounds, with the Gallarus Oratory Visitor Centre nearby offering a souvenir shop and refreshments.
