Dingle Landmarks and Monuments

(Dingle, County Kerry, Republic of Ireland)

Photo of the Blaskets areaDingle has a string of landmarks and monuments around and about. Notwithstanding the harbour, John Street is the main focus of activity in the town and is one of the most enchanting sights, with its collection of coloured houses, shops and pubs.

The Eask Tower is the most impressive landmark near the town, allowing visitors to take in spectacular Dingle views from its hilltop location. Other important Dingle landmarks include the Fungi Sculpture and the nearby Blasket Islands.

Blasket Islands

Address: Dingle, Republic of Ireland, IE
The Blaskets are a must-see set of islands lying off the tip of the Dingle Peninsula, featuring striking coastlines and reminders of previous inhabitants. The Blasket Islands are also Europe's westernmost islands and were abandoned in the 1950s. Great Blasket is the main island and has no services - no electricity, phones or even roads - making it a sublime place for the naturalist. Boat trips frequently head here during the summer months, departing from the town's harbour.

John Street is the quintessential Dingle street and has most of the action. It runs from Main Street towards the east of town, parallel to the harbourfront, and comes with a kilometre of shopping, eateries and hotels. It is particularly photogenic as it contains a myriad of characterful houses and is on an incline. John Street is a short walk from the town centre and the harbour, with Main Street leading to the west, and Green Street and Strand Street also close by.

This attractive bronze sculpture of the ever-present lone dolphin, Fungi, is a cute little landmark at the harbour. The life-sized sculpture was donated to the town by a Californian visitor who became rather smitten with the resident dolphin. Kids will enjoy sitting on his back and having their picture taken.
