Whilst many visitors opt to visit Montpellier during the summer months, visiting the city out of season certainly has its advantages. Temperatures for sightseeing are much more pleasant during the spring and autumn climate, for example, and Montpellier itself is much less crowded.

Seasonal Climate Variations / When to Go

Springtime weather in Montpellier is perfectly pleasant. Even this early on in the year, it's possible to swim in the Mediterranean or to relax in a sun lounger on one of the nearby beaches. For many tourists, however, it is the city's floral displays that are particularly memorable.

There's no escaping from the fact that the summer months can be very warm in Montpellier, with an average temperature of 26°C / 79°F. Visitors should be prepared to take time out from sightseeing during the middle of the day when the sunny weather is at its hottest. However, there is often a gentle breeze and this can make the overall climate feel more pleasant. During July and August, the sea temperatures are quite high for those who enjoy swimming. In addition, temperatures are pleasant enough in the evenings for visitors to sit outdoors at Montpellier's many pavement cafes and restaurants.

The difference between summer and autumn may not be immediately obvious to visitors, particularly those used to more northerly climates. In essence, summer weather in Montpellier can last all the way through to October. At this time of the year, temperatures often register as high as 19°C / 67°F during the day, making it still possible to enjoy a swim in the sea. Whilst evenings aren't quite as warm as in the summer, they nevertheless remain balmy.

Sunny winter days in Montpellier can mean that enjoyable al fresco lunches or coffee breaks don't have to be limited to the summer months. Winter temperatures are an average of 11°C / 52°F. Even when temperatures drop below average, the blue skies and crisp air more than make up for it.
