Many truly world-class attractions are just a short drive from Weston Super Mare and include the city of Bristol, where its seasonal football matches and major theatres are especially notable.

Also nearby are a number of top attractions at the appealing seaside town of Clevedon, which is extremely close to Weston Super Mare, while the village of Cheddar is worth visiting for its cream teas alone.



Bristol

The city of Bristol is located around 39 km / 24 miles to the south-west of Weston Super Mare and has a population of around 420,000 people. Home to the acclaimed Clifton Suspension Bridge, Bristol is full of top tourist attractions, including the Bristol Hippodrome, the Colston Hall and the Old Vic theatres, together with the At Bristol attraction, the cathedral, the summer balloon festival at Ashton Court, and the University Botanical Gardens.

Clevedon

Clevedon is a small town just 19 km / 12 miles north-east of Weston Super Mare, with a population of roughly 25,000 people. Lying alongside of fairly rugged and rocky coastline, Clevedon features a number of good restaurants, a refurbished Victorian pier along which many locals fish for cod, a small seafront amusement arcade and also a popular cliff top walk with many vantage points along the way, where the views are simply breathtaking.

Cheddar

Famous for its cheese, which is now made all over the world, Cheddar is a large and extremely popular village, roughly 21 km / 13 miles east of Weston Super Mare, and located alongside Axbridge. Also near to Burrington Combe, Cheddar has a population of around 6,000 and features a valley of awe-inspiring rock faces, known as Cheddar Gorge, which is the biggest of its kind in the whole of England and around 122 metres / 400 feet in height and 5 km / 3 miles long. Cheddar also features countless caves, a number of which are open to members of the public, while others appeal to experienced potholers.

Portishead

The lively town of Portishead stands approximately 34 km / 21 miles from Weston Super Mare, standing on the north-eastern side. Known for its Victorian terraces overlooking parts of the Severn Estuary, Portishead is conveniently close to the M5 motorway. Attractions at Portishead include the Lake Grounds, where boating and seasonal cricket matches are always popular. The recently revamped Portishead docks are also worth a look and offer numerous trendy waterfront bars, eateries and shops at their best, together with a large and stylish marina area.
