Winchester Shopping and Districts

(Winchester, Hampshire, England, UK)

High Street photoSurrounded by countless market towns and home to an impressive selection of independent stores, the shopping in Winchester is quite unique. As you walk around the streets of central Winchester and enjoy an afternoon of window shopping, you will often likely encounter busking street entertainers and beautiful historical buildings.

If possible, do try to make your shopping trip coincide with the atmospheric market held each Wednesday to Saturday on Middle Brook Street, between Upper Brook Street and Friarsgate. Alternatively, head outside of Winchester and to the shops of Bishop's Waltham, New Alresford, Wickham, where a popular outlet village is to be found. Even the shopping city of Salisbury is but a 45-minute drive away, with the huge indoor malls of Southampton being even closer.

Where to Shop

Situated in the very heart of the city, the Brooks Shopping Centre is a sizeable indoor mall and houses some familiar brands, such as Argos, BHS, Beales, New Look and Waterstones.

Open from 09:00 to 17:30 between Monday and Saturday, and again on Sundays from 10:00 to 16:30, Winchester's Brooks Shopping Centre is certainly a good place to while away a rainy day and should you need to take a break, then rest assured that a branch of the Costa Coffee shop is to hand.

Further image of the city's High StreetThe High Street of Winchester is an especially historical part of the city and was actually once an important Roman road, heading in an east to west direction. Today, the High Street is better known for its comprehensive shopping opportunities and provides an appealing mixture of local independent stores and national names. At the very top, the pedestrianised Walcote Place is a popular side street and is lined with trendy boutiques and modern jewellers.

For galleries, hair salons and further clothing stores, Parchment Street is worth bearing in mind, while more shopping is available nearby, along Great Minster Street, The Square and Southgate Street. Standing alongside Winchester Cathedral, the Cathedral Shop is a good place for city souvenirs and stands within a charming Coach House building.
