Located on the southern side of England and within the county of Hampshire, the historic city of Winchester serves as the county town and is to be found on the westerly edge of the South Downs. This city has a lengthy history of more than 2,000 years and much of its success is all down to its strategic location, alongside the River Itchen.

The city of Winchester began its long life as a simple Celtic hill fortress and was later conquered by the Romans, who brought with them modern construction techniques and experienced city planners. Today, the city is perhaps best known for its grand cathedral, which does rather dominate the city centre and dates back to the latter part of the 11th century. The ancient remains of the 12th-century castle are also likely to be of interest to sightseers keen to immerse themselves in history.

Much of the appeal of visiting Winchester is its situation, since the city is just a short distance from Southampton (south) and is within easy reach of London (north-east), particularly if you are planning to travel by rail. The New Forest National Park is to be found to the south-west and is packed with interest, with day trippers tending to favour the towns of Brockenhurst and Lyndhurst.
