Therefore it is useful to first obtain of list of city lodging options from the Tourist Information Centre if you haven't booked ahead.

A popular summer alternative to mainstream hotels is the cheap campus accommodation offered by the universities and colleges in Winchester. Most of these rooms are en suite and include both single and double rooms, best suiting budget travellers.

Where to Stay

Guest houses and B&Bs are especially plentiful along streets such as the Clifton Road, Hyde Street, Kingsgate Street, Parchment Street, Ranelagh Road, St. Michael's Road and Upper Brook Street. Located in the Hyde area and on Saxon Road, the King Alfred Pub offers good-value accommodation within walking distance of Winchester's train station.

Located on St. Peter's Street, the Winchester Royal Hotel features pleasant lodging in the very heart of the city, near to the Brooks Shopping Centre. Dating back to the middle of the 16th century, accommodation here is packed with character, while the Conservatory Restaurant provides affordable 'a la carte' dining.

The Mercure Wessex offers use of the neighbouring leisure centre and more importantly, boasts views of Winchester Cathedral.

Situated just over 5 km / 3 miles to the west of Winchester, the village of Sparsholt is home to the rather elegant Lainston House Hotel, where accommodation comes in the form of a beautiful 17th-century country house, surrounded by some 24 hectares / 60 acres of rolling Hampshire parkland. As well as providing a comfortable place to bed down for the night, the Lainston House Hotel is also known for its wedding packages and related facilities. A little further away and to the north, the Norton Park Hotel and Conference Centre is a similar accommodation option and resides in Sutton Scotney.

If you prefer camping to city hotels, then the Morn Hill Caravan Club on Alresford Road, on the easterly outskirts of Winchester, is worth considering and has pitches for both tents and touring caravans.
