Queenstown International Airport (ZQN) Information

(Queenstown, Otago, South Island, New Zealand)

Queenstown International Airport serves this popular resort destination of New Zealand. It is located close to Queenstown Bay on Lake Wakitipu, in New Zealand's South Island. Surrounded by mountains which hold winter ski resorts and enjoy warm, sunny weather in summer, the airport is busy year-round, with almost one million visitors now served per year and passenger numbers increasing.

The majority of flights from the airport are to domestic destinations around New Zealand, with the exceptions of a small number of international routes to Australia, served on a weekly basis. During the skiing season, however, extra international flights take place through Qantas, Air New Zealand and Pacific Blue, in order to cope with the extra demand. Charter traffic and general aviation flights are also relatively heavy here. Interestingly, until an upgrade which took effect in July 2011, the runway lights were inadequate for poor weather conditions, allowing for daytime flights only.

International destinations served in Australia include Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, with flights provided by Qantas, Air New Zealand, Virgin Australia and Jetstar. Domestic flights at Queenstown include those to most of New Zealand's spectacular natural beauty hotspots, such as the Southern Alps, Mount Cook, Rotorua and Milford Sound, as well as the buzzing cities of Wellington and Auckland, and the South Island visitor hub of Christchurch.
