Aerial photo of the resort, taken from the gondola rideThe Queenstown area of New Zealand has become something on an outdoor adventure sports Mecca and the scenery is equally impressive, with highlights such as the very beautiful Lake Wakatipu and its surrounding mountain peaks, such as the Remarkables and the Eyres. Popular tourist hotspots around Queenstown include Ben Lomond, Fernhill, Kelvin Heights, Moke Lake, Mount Crichton, Sunshine Bay, and of course, the resort of Queenstown itself.

The actual town of Queenstown is to be found on the northerly shore of Lake Wakatipu and within the Otago region. Queenstown lies on the south-western side of New Zealand's South Island and is a fairly compact town, known for its steep slopes connecting the actual lakeside.

Maps and Orientation of the Town

Home to just over 10,000 residents, the resort of Queenstown is very much centred around its main thoroughfare of Shotover Street and the traffic-free Mall area. The Queenstown visitors centre resides on the very corner of Shotover Street and Camp Street and is a good place to pick up regional maps and book accommodation.

Those wishing to explore the area surrounding Queenstown may like to check out the Fiordland National Park to the west, or head northwards to the neighbouring Mount Aspiring National Park.
