Milford Sound Hotels and Accommodation

(Milford Sound, South Island, New Zealand)

Dumpling Hut picture, at Milford SoundMost people don't even consider staying at Milford Sound, simply making day trips from the nearby towns of Queenstown or Te Anau. There are accommodation options here, though - Mitre Lodge, for those finishing the Milford Track, and the Milford Sound Lodge which is open to all. Certain cruisers also offer accommodation on the Sound itself.

The best hotels and lodging options by a country mile are in Queenstown. It has class hotels, guest houses, backpacker pads and apartments, although it is quite pricey. Te Anau is more laid-back and geared mainly to the walking crowd, with cheap lodging easily available.

Where to Stay

The Milford Sound Lodge is the only real accommodation choice here.

It is positioned on a riverfront farther back from the Sound and comes with chalets over the water and backpacker accommodation, as well as some campervan and tent sites. It also has the only grocer shop in the area.

Those doing the 'posh' version of the Milford Track and staying in swanky cabins can also take advantage of the Mitre Peak Lodge at the end of the walk.
