The thriving Civic area is the main shopping centre in Canberra and throughout the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). The centrally located Civic district is home to large spreading pedestrianised precincts, stylish malls and department stores, including both Myers and David Jones department stores. Featuring the largest concentration of shops in the city, the Civic district is also home to a good selection of speciality shops, jewellers, galleries, antiques stores, restaurants, street cafés and street entertainment.

Along City Walk in the Civic district, around Bunda Street, is the Canberra Shopping Centre, a large and trendy indoor mall which has many outstanding fashion boutiques, clothing shops of all descriptions, homeware outlets, department stores, a food court, gift shops, a large car park and exceptional amenities, including wheelchair access. With almost 200 shops, the Canberra Shopping Centre is one of the best places to shop in the whole of the Australian Capital Territory.


Other districts and suburbs of Canberra with good shopping options include theBelconnen, Manuka, Tuggeranong and Woden areas, which contain a wealth of shops and out of town retail parks. The Australian capital also features a range of shops along the central Northbourne Avenue, where you will find the main post office, and nearby the City Markets neighbourhood, with supermarkets, grocery stores and speciality shops.

For fun shopping and some of the best bargains in Canberra, visit the city's numerous markets. These include the Belconnen Food and Fruit Market on Lathlain Street, the Gorman House Market on Ainslie Avenue, the Hall Markets at the Hall Showground, and the city's most popular market, the Old Bus Depot Flea Market on Wentworth Avenue, based within the Kingston district.

Opening Hours

Most shopping centres in the Canberra and Australian Capital Territory (ACT) are open between 09:00 to 17:30 Monday to Thursday, 09:00 to 17:00 on a Saturday, and until 21:00 on Friday, with some centres also staying open later on Thursdays. Sunday trading in Australia is beginning to increase in popularity, albeit with more restricted opening hours, generally between 10:00 to 16:00, although many shops and department stores currently remain closed on Sundays. Trading hours for shops within the shopping malls and centres can vary so it may be advisable to check websites for opening times.
