In Da Nang itself, you can travel around by buses, taxis and speedy 'xe om' moto-taxis.

Da Nang International Airport is an important gateway into the central Vietnam region and handles flights from Taiwan and China, as well as from domestic destinations. This is a modern airport with a new terminal recently completed as part of an expansion programme, and handles over a million passenger throughputs annually, which makes it Vietnam's third-busiest. The principal airlines are Air Mekong, Jetstar Pacific, TransAsia Airways and Vietnam Airlines, which fly to destinations such as Buon Ma Thuot, Da Lat, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hong Kong, Nha Trang, Seoul, Singapore and Tokyo. Services include car hire and taxis, and these are readily available for the 3-km / 2-mile journey into Da Nang.

Car rental in Da Nang is straightforward to arrange, either at the airport or in the city, although this will include a driver. Da Nang is well-connected by national highways 1A and 14B to Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and all major towns in between, as well as to the Central Highlands and west as far as Laos. The Hai Van Tunnel provides a safe passage through the mountains, avoiding the dangers of the old road across Hai Van Pass. Generally, roads in the region are safe, making car rental a good way to travel at your convenience.

Buses and Coaches

Buses run from Da Nang to Hue and Hoi An, and farther on a regular basis. The journeys take around three hours, although it should be noted that these buses pass under the high peaks in a tunnel, thus depriving passenger of the superb views from the pass. Other bus services run as far as Laos, and a local daily bus service takes in Savannakhet, Tha Khok and Vian Tieng. Long-distance buses travel from Hanoi to Da Nang, a distance of around 752 km / 470 miles, arriving at the long-distance bus station on Dien Bien Phu Street.

Da Nang's central rail station on Haiphong Street is a major stop on the route taken by the Hanoi - Saigon Reunification Express service from the north of Vietnam to its south. Local slow trains run to Hue, taking around four hours through glorious coastal scenery and are very cheap. Express train transport is on hand if you are looking to save time and connects Vietnamese destinations such as Hue (two and a half hours), Lang Co (one and a half hours), Nha Trang (eight and a half hours), Quang Ngai (two and a half hours) and Tuy Hoa (seven and a half hours).

If you are crazy about train travel, you can take a train from London via Moscow to Beijing, then on to Hanoi, arriving around two weeks after you left the UK.

Taxis

Metered taxis are easily available in Da Nang, although it is best to agree a fare for the journey before you set off, as Vietnamese taxi drivers have been known to rig their meters. Drivers have no problems with longer sightseeing journeys but, again, a fare should be arranged before you go. Notable taxi firms operating in the city include both Mai Linh and Taxi Xanh. Moto-taxis (xe om) are also a convenient and very cheap way to travel around the city.

Boats and Ferries

The city's port provides ferry services to around 30,000 passengers annually, including those holiday makers who choose to arrive by cruise ship. Shuttle ferry services to nearby coastal towns run regularly and make for scenic excursions.
