Bandung Art Galleries

There are a number of fine art galleries located within the city of Bandung, offering the chance to see the works of many leading Indonesian artists. Particularly notable are the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), the Selasar Sunaryo Art Space (SSAS) and the NuArt Sculpture Park.

The Museum Barli celebrates the life and works of famous local artist Barli Sasmitawinata, who was born in Bandung in 1921, only dying fairly recently in the early part of 2007. Barli Sasmitawinata became a keen artist in the 1930s and soon began to exhibit his paintings all over Indonesia and in prominent art galleries around the world.

At the Museum Barli, there are more than 100 examples of the work of Barli Sasmitawinata, covering different periods of his work, such as realism impressionism and modern expressionism. Various events are staged at the gallery each year, including temporary exhibitions of local art works, discussion groups and social gatherings. A shop is on hand, should you wish to purchase postcards, prints or ceramics.

Institute of Technology (ITB)

Located on the northerly side of the Gedung Sate and along the Jalan Ganeca, the Bandung Institute of Technology opened in the early 1920s and was founded by the Dutch. This university is known for its stylish architecture, which is 'Indo-European' in character and is home to one of Indonesia's most renowned fine arts schools. The onsite art gallery is open to members of the public and is well worth checking out, if you are in the vicinity.

Selasar Sunaryo Art Space (SSAS)

Often abbreviated as simply the 'SSAS', the Selasar Sunaryo Art Space opened its door to the general public in 1998 and continues to actively promote the development of all aspects of art, throughout Bandung and Indonesia. Home to a collection of stylish contemporary paintings, photographs and handicrafts, the Selasar Sunaryo Art Space regularly features the works of up-and-coming local artists. The Selasar Cafe (Kopi Selasar) and Cinderamata Selasar gift shop complete the main attractions.

NuArt Sculpture Park

The NuArt Sculpture Park lies on the northerly side of the city and was founded at the turn of the new millennium. The majority of the art works and sculptures on display are the creations of local sculptor Nyoman Nuarta, being exhibited both inside and out, within the surrounding gardens. The actually gallery building itself is spread over two floors, with the upstairs space being used to host temporary displays. Attractions onsite at the NuArt Sculpture Park include the N Cafe, serving tasty hot snacks such as crispy duck and salads, as well as a craft boutique, where you are able to purchase some small art works, perfect for packing away in your suitcase when you fly home.
