Sited next to the Arabian Sea and within the tropical zone, the climate of Mumbai falls into two distinctive seasons, the dry season and also the humid season. With temperatures averaging 30°C / 86°F or more for most of the year, whatever the weather, you can be sure that it is going to be fairly warm in Mumbai.

During June, July, August and September, Mumbai experiences monsoon spells and heavy showers, although you can still expect plenty of sunny spells at this time of the year. Generally the monsoon arrives slowly, gradually affecting the climate. At first, the arid and dusty weather simply becomes more humid, still remaining fairly hot. During Mumbai's humid season, it tends to rain almost every day, but by no means solidly.

June and July are consistently the wettest months in Mumbai, with precipitation levels always exceeding 500 mm / 19.7 inches. The winter climate is quite different, with hardly even a drop of rain between December and April.

Many people prefer to visit Mumbai at any time from November to May, when the weather is at its most pleasant and stable. The dry climate ensures that tourists are free to explore the city's many attractions without the need for an umbrella. However, occasional northerly winds can cause temperatures to plummet during the dry season, feeling a little chilly. This is especially so at night-time, although temperatures rarely drop below 20°C / 68°F.
