Particularly impressive are New Delhi's elaborate Mughal Gardens, surrounding the presidential palace of Rashtrapati Bhavan, which are open to members of the public each February and March.

Lovers of horticulture will also enjoy the stunning annual New Delhi Flower Show, held each year at the Talkatora Gardens in February. The city's main parks and gardens are detailed below.

Lodhi Garden

The Lodhi Garden is close to the busy India International Centre and is frequented by both locals and visitors alike. Located within easy reach of central New Delhi and home to a number of historic tombs, many families come to the park, where their children can let off steam and run around the many pathways and lawns. For those with green fingers, the landscaped gardens feature many native plants and flowers.

Asola Wildlife Sanctuary

Located on the south-easterly side of New Delhi, the Asola Wildlife Sanctuary covers a vast area of more than 6,000 acres / 2,400 hectares. Famed for its native flora and fauna, you can expect to see many colourful flowers, including wild bougainvillea vines. It is possible to drive through this park and guides are available at the main entrance, should you require further information as you tour the sanctuary. This is a good place for birdwatching.

Nehru Park

Nehru Park lies on the southern side of New Delhi, within the Chankayapuri neighbourhood. Close to the bustling Santushti Shopping Centre and spreading for around 80 acres / 32 hectares, this popular park features concerts each Sunday morning and free open-air Yoga classes Monday to Saturday. Nehru Park is regularly frequented by fitness fanatics, families and those simply looking for a peaceful spot suitable for a picnic.

Shalimar Bagh Gardens (Shalimar Mughal Gardens)

Address: Shalimar Bagh, New Delhi, India, IN
The Shalimar Bagh Gardens can be found on the northern side of New Delhi, close to Delhi University. Of great historical significance, the gardens date back to the 17th century and have recently been thoroughly renovated, with many areas replanted. Look out for the fountains and also the eye-catching central pavilion.

Talkatora Gardens

Well known for their large and impressive stadium (Talkatora Indoor Stadium), the Talkatora Gardens are particularly appealing during springtime, when many plants are filled with blossom and fresh colours. Perfect for picnicking, relaxing and sunbathing, the Talkatora Gardens regularly host many seasonal events and are also home to a popular swimming pool, which offers one of the best ways to cool down on a hot day.

Buddha Jayanti Park

The centrally located Buddha Jayanti Park is a great place to find peace and quiet, away from the city centre itself. With seasonal flower displays, heavily wooded areas and large expanses of lawned areas, this park is especially popular with locals, who come here at midday to enjoy their lunch.
