New Delhi Hotels and Accommodation

(New Delhi, Delhi, India)

Picture of the Rajpath promenadeThe best hotels and accommodation in New Delhi gets booked up fast, making it necessary to plan ahead, or be prepared for the onslaught of hotel touts trying to get their commission. In most cases, hotels are happy to collect you from Indira Gandhi International Airport, close to New Delhi city centre, although this will usually need to be arranged in advance.

For most hotels in New Delhi, checkout will be at midday, with luggage storage usually available for just a nominal charge. Accommodation is at its cheapest between the middle of April to the middle of August, which is regarded as the low season. Many hotels around central New Delhi are located next to busy, noisy streets, so if you are a light-sleeper, it would be prudent to request a quiet room.

Where to Stay

Most budget hotels tend to be fairly basic, with small guest rooms and limited amenities, although they are generally extremely cheap. Much of the city's budget accommodation is concentrated around the Paharganj district, being especially popular with backpackers and tourists looking for value lodging. The best budget hotels can be found along the Main Bazaar and its many connecting alleyways, close to New Delhi train station.

Since the quality of budget accommodation can vary from hotel to hotel, do inspect your room first. Another cluster of budget hotels reside within the Majnu-ka-Tilla area of New Delhi, although this is not as centrally located as Paharganj.

On the northern side of the city, the Old Delhi area is by no means a tourist hotspot, although should you wish to stay here, you will find a number of reasonably priced hotels to choose from. These are located close to the Jama Masjid mosque.

For a mixture of good-value hotels and restaurants, head to New Delhi's Majnu-ka Tilla neighbourhood, which lies on the northern side of the Civil Lines. Often referred to as the 'Tibetan Colony', this area is especially peaceful and a good place to escape from the city centre.

Those who wish to stay in the very heart of New Delhi will find that the hotels around Connaught Place are amongst the most convenient. In general though, you will be paying for the location rather than the quality of the accommodation and service. Nearby and within the Chanakyapuri district, the Youth Hostel along Nyaya Marg is another good option for budget travellers staying in New Delhi. A family hostel is also located along Ashoka Road, while around 3 km / 2 miles to the south-east of Connaught Place, the hotels within the leafy suburb of Sunder Nagar are worth considering.
