Plaza picture, showing the Bell TowerThe lodging scene is Xian has been transformed in recent years and the city now boasts a selection of budget accommodation that it can be truly proud to offer. Typical of many cities in China, the majority of the cheapest hotels in Xian do tend to be found in the vicinity of the railway and bus station, such as the Ludao Binguan on the Xi Balu, which is part hotel, part youth hostel.

There are also a number of very well-priced hotels residing within the city walls, with a choice of accommodation lining the Jie Fang Lu. However, for the best room rates in Xian, don't be afraid to bargain and ask for discounts, particularly during the quietest times.

Where to Stay

One of the most popular choices for backpackers in Xian is the Shyuan Youth Hotel, which is located on the Xi Nanmen and is especially close to the South Gate, where it features dormitory-style accommodation built around a courtyard.

For a little more money, consider staying at the YMCA Hotel on the Dong Dajie, or at the Lijing Jiudian on the Xi Dajie, directly across from the Bell Tower Square. The hotel enjoys a central location in Xian and even features its very own tea garden on its fourth floor.

The Bell Tower Hotel on the Xi Dajie is actually managed by the Holiday Inn group and is therefore both reliable and affordable, while the Hyatt Regency Xian on the Dong Dajie is hard to beat in terms of location, facilities and services.

Another very noteworthy accommodation option is the Hotel Royal Xian, which also stands on the Dong Dajie and is part of the Nikko Hotels group from Japan, and tends to be a little cheaper than the Hyatt, offering discounts most months.
