Xian Xianyang International Airport (XIY) Information

(Xian, Shaanxi, China)

Four years after the Xian Xianyang International Airport opened in 2003, this hub serving the ancient Silk Road terminus of Xian signed an 'air silk road' trading agreement with Pittsburgh International. However, Pittsburgh is just one of nearly 80 international and domestic destinations that can be reached non-stop from this hub, north-west China's biggest airport.

The Xian Xianyang International Airport is currently China's eighth-busiest air facility, with slightly more than 21 million passengers entering its three terminals per annum. All international and most domestic flights use Terminal 2, where the first floor contains the Arrivals hall and the second floor includes the Departures hall. The brand new Terminal 3 handles domestic flights with four major Chinese airlines.

The Xian Xianyang International Airport has recently enjoyed a major expansion project, increasing its overall potential capacity to 26 million passengers. The city's transportation network has come a long way since the era when most Silk Road traders entered the now 6,000-year-old city on camels.

Car Rental

The Xianyang International Airport Exclusive Expressway and the Xianyang International Airport Expressway are the two main roads between the city and its airport. The car journey between the two destinations takes about an hour on both expressways. Traffic in the city of Xian can be heavy and local drivers rarely stop for anything, other than red traffic lights.

Taxis

While taxis are extremely popular and convenient, cab drivers are known to increase their fares for tourists. Advance bargaining is the best way to avoid the price gouging common along taxi routes to the centre of Xian. Of note, you can expect to pay considerably more for cabs with air conditioning. However, this will certainly make the 50-minute journey more comfortable on hot days.

Buses

The airport has an intercity bus service to several other nearby cities, as well as six separate shuttle bus lines which travel to the city centre, the rail station, the signature Bell Tower, three different hotels and the city's High Technology Industries Development Zone. The fare for most of these buses is basically the same, regardless of distance. If you are planning to visit the famous Terracotta Army, then catch a bus to the rail station.
