Central street viewThere are a number of local delicacies served at dining establishments throughout the city, with Gui Lin Mi Fen (Guilin rice noodles) regularly making an appearance on many a restaurant menu, along with roast pork, chicken and also horse meat. Guilin rice noodles seem to be served almost everywhere and is traditionally flavoured with a tasty soup and pickles.

Often the dishes can feature rather exotic and unusual creatures, such as wild cats, monkeys and even snakes, and some eateries in Guilin even serve up endangered species, including the 'pangolin' (scaly anteater) and the 'muntjac' (Asian deer). Therefore, those dining out at the city's restaurants are advised to choose their meal carefully, and be ready for a very unique experience.

Where to Eat

There are a large number of eateries spread around the city, although those based next to Guilin's railway station are best avoided. A more reliable area to look for restaurants is directly to the north of the Central Square, on the Yiren Lu. Here you will discover plenty of good-value dining venues, ranging from small restaurants with a buffet-style service, to trendy cafes with a friendly vibe.

If you prefer to cater during your stay in Guilin, then there are several large supermarkets in the city. However, for many visitors, the most well-placed supermarket is likely to be the one in the basement of the Nikodo Plaza.
