Botanical Gardens
What a hidden gem of Xiamen with its varied gardens and hidden Temples. Steps and paths to climb through shaded woodland at times swarming with butterflies and an ideal route to escape the crowds. With what seems like thousands of rocks you will soon find yourself squeezing through narrow gaps or climbing narrow weatherworn but safe steep steps to get a view of Xiam's skyline. The Desert Region is also worth a visit with a vast array of flowering cacti some under glass and a temperature of around 41 degrees so returning to the July hot weather really makes the air seem cool!
Remember to carry proof of age as if you are over 60 you can get into the Gardens for half price.

Coyote Cafe' and Cantina
When in Xiamen and getting tired of eating Chinese food, go to Coyote Cafe' and Cantina. This is real Mexican food at its best, along with the best Margaritas and even, which has to be the best cheesecake in China. Nice bar also, friendly staff that speaks good English, set back look outside at lake, relax have a Margarita and enjoy with your friends or sit at the bar and make new friends.

Going to Gulangyu Island
Gulangyu Island is one not to miss and is the largest of all the islands of Xiamen. The roads on the island are winding and give Gulangyu a lot of character. Try and come here for an entire day and take a walk along the long perimteter trail, which is around 2.5 miles in length. There are many magnificent colonial houses on mansions on this island. Some very famous Chinese musicians hae grown up here and interestingly, it often goes by the name of the 'Island of Pianos' because something like one tenth of all houses have a piano. Regular ferry rides are cheap and getting here is quite a pleasant and scenic journey.
