Responsible for the building of the Jimei School Village educational complex, this revered Chinese patron of education is immortalised at Xiamen's beautiful Turtle Garden, while other Chinese icons, such as Zheng Chenggong, make an appearance elsewhere.

For the most scenic views of the Xiamen city, Sunlight Rock is a famous regional landmark and a worthwhile climb, during which you can also enjoy cooling sea breezes. Set amid a mountainous backdrop, Nanputuo Temple is a beautiful ancient temple complex consisting of several buildings. Pay this Xiamen temple a visit to appreciate the beauty of the 686 AD buildings, but also to explore the bizarre souvenir shops and their mostly religious wares. Dedicated to the goddess Guanyin, visitors can watch locals making offerings to this deity and others, as well as get a glimpse of the resident monks conducting their daily business.

Sunlight Rock

Frequently labelled as Gulangyu Island's most beautiful spot, Sunlight Rock combines soft sea breezes, pleasant harbour views and the gentle sound of waves crashing at the shoreline. This lookout area is the highest point on the island and from here, climbers will be rewarded with vistas of the colonial island-scape, as well as views of nearby islands, weather permitting.

Jimei School Village

Jimei's most famous son, Tan Kah-Kee established a dozen different schools here, helping to put Xiamen on the map as a centre of learning. Characterised by Chinese architecture with Western influences, the buildings at the Jimei School Village house various educational centres, such as a library, gym and science facility. The construction of the 'village' saw the one-time rural community transform into a bustle student town, with students coming from across the region to attend the acclaimed institutes.

In commemoration of Zheng Chenggong and his defeat of the Dutch, Xiamen's Zheng Chenggong Memorial Hall stands as a tribute to the man attributed with liberating Taiwan.

Visitors who are interested in learning more about this historical character can trace his life through the relics and other items on display. A belt made from jade, which is said to have belonged to Chenggdong, is also exhibited and a definite highlight.
