Hotels in Xiamen rarely fill to capacity and as a result, it can be possible to obtain some hefty last minutes discounts, by simply enquiring at the hotel's reception. However, during the first week of September, hotels in Xiamen quickly fill up as the city plays host to a large and popular annual investment fair. The city's hotels are also busy during the Dragon Boat Races, which take place in July and always attract large crowds.

Many people looking for accommodation in Xiamen choose to stay on the nearby island of Gulàng Yu, a sleepy and peaceful spot located just a five-minute boat journey from the city centre. Hotels in Gulàng Yu enjoy an also Mediterranean character on this island, where winding paths, courtyards, plenty of colonial buildings and stunning views await.

Where to Stay

Hotels in Xiamen are mainly mid-range, heading towards the luxury end of the accommodation scale. Budget options do exist if you look hard enough and include the Overseas Student Dormitory at the Xiamen University campus, where rooms may be fairly basic, but extremely cheap.

Also offering especially good value for money is the Singapore Hotel on Xian Lu, which stands close to Zhonghan Park and contains clean guest rooms and modern amenities.

View of the scenic waterfrontAmongst the most popular accommodation options in Xiamen are the Gem Hotel on Zhongshan Lu, the Lujiang Hotel along Lujiang Dao, and the Xiamen Hotel on Huyuan Lu, which is known for its colonial character are large swimming pool. At the top end of the market, the Marco Polo Hotel stands alongside the Yuandang Lake and within the buzzing new commercial area, and is hard to beat.

Another popular hotel chain is the Holiday Inn on Zhenhai Lu, a four-star hotel boasting some of the best restaurants in the whole of Xiamen, where both Chinese and more international dishes are on offer. For sublime indulgence on a grand scale, the five-star Mandarin Hotel features luxury accommodation at its best and stands along Yuehua Road, in the Fijan district. Xiamen's Mandarin Hotel contains almost 300 rooms and a high level of accommodation, being conveniently close to the airport.
