Zimbabwe Towns, Cities, Locations and Districts

(Zimbabwe, ZW, Southern Africa)

Zimbabwe is divided into eight administrative provinces, which include the two largest cities of Harare and Bulawayo. There are relatively few large urban centres within the borders of the country.

Located within the country's northeastern quarter, Harare serves as its capital city and holds much interest for tourists, as does Bulawayo on the southwestern side of Zimbabwe. Between them, these two large cities manage to boast the principal museums and national archives within this country.

A number of the main towns and cities have grown up alongside the development of the railways in colonial Southern Africa. Today, they serve as useful transport hubs for travellers, with many holding more than a spot of interest for sightseers and keen photographers.

Harare

Harare might not be packed full of sightseeing opportunities, but it is a pleasant enough city. It is also easy to get around. Situated in the 'highveld' of Zimbabwe, the city's streets manage to boast plenty of green spaces. More information about Harare

Bulawayo

Located to the south-west of Harare, Bulawayo is the second-largest city in Zimbabwe. It is a multi-cultural urban centre that for a long time held a prominent position as the industrial heart of the country. Today, Bulawayo has become a rather elegant if somewhat time-worn sort of place. Nonetheless, as home to the National Art Gallery, it is certainly worthy of a visit.

Gweru

Gweru is a modestly sized city located in the centre of Zimbabwe. Founded in the late 19th century, it is perhaps best known for its role as a busy railway hub. Amongst the city's main landmarks is its early 20th-century memorial tower, known as the Boggle Clock Tower. Nearby visitor attractions include the Antelope Game Park.

Mutare

Known as Umtali until 1982, Mutare is one of Zimbabwe's largest cities. It was originally established as a fort because of its location on the border with Mozambique. Often regarded as the 'Gateway to the Eastern Highlands', Mutare is surrounded by green mountains, which make for excellent scenic views and game spotting opportunities.

Masvingo

Known as Fort Victoria up until 1982, Masvingo is situated in the south-eastern part of Zimbabwe. Masvingo is, in fact, the oldest colonial settlement in Zimbabwe. A leftover of those colonial days is the town's Old Fort national monument.
