Zimbabwe Maps and Orientation

(Zimbabwe, ZW, Southern Africa)

Officially called the Republic of Zimbabwe, this large landlocked country is to be found within Southern Africa, where it sits sandwiched in between the Limpopo River and the Zambezi River.

Forming a natural boundary on the northwestern side of the country, the Zambezi River separates Zambia and feeds the famous Victoria Falls. This enormous line of cascading waterfalls is at its absolute best during the months of February, March and April, following periods of significant rainfall.

Directly south of Zimbabwe lies South Africa, while Botswana is to the west and within relatively close proximity to Bulawayo. In fact, Francistown (Botswana) is just a little over three hours from Bulawayo by road and can be reached by following the A7 to the border, and then joining the A1. Maps show how the entire eastern border of Zimbabwe meets with Mozambique, with the city of Chimoio being just across the border from Mutare.

Maps and Orientation of the Country

Zimbabwe is divided into a total of five different regions, namely the Eastern Highlands, Lake Kariba and the Lower Zambezi, Mashonaland, Matabeleland and South-Eastern Zimbabwe. The Eastern Highlands forms a particularly mountainous region and sits on the eastern side of the country, where it is called home by the Vumba Mountains.

Lake Kariba and the Lower Zambezi is a northerly region, being a popular spot for vacationers planning to spend time at the Mana Pools National Park. Mashonaland is where Zimbabwe's capital city of Harare resides, on the northern side of the country. South-Eastern Zimbabwe forms a southerly section and encompasses parts of the Midlands and the Lowveld. It is here where the ancient archaeological site of Great Zimbabwe is situated, forming the biggest and arguably the most important of all the ruins within sub-Saharan Africa.

Matabeleland occupies the western region of Zimbabwe and enjoys a healthy tourism scene, thanks to the presence of the Victoria Falls.

Apart from Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe, other notable towns and cities include Binga, Bulawayo, Gweru, Kariba, Marondera, Masvingo, Mutare and Victoria Falls.
