In recent years, much of central Alexandria was been somewhat renovated and overhauled, resulting in a gradual and marked improvement to the city's lodging including hotels and other accommodation on offer here. With swathes of holiday apartments, cheap budget hotels nearby and numerous modern five-star complexes in the heart of Alexandria, it is soon apparent that only a handful of mid-range hotels are available here.

Alexandria's high season tends to fall between June and September each year, when many visitors seem to arrive from Cairo to escape the almost unbearable heat. This means that during the height of this busy period, accommodation becomes particularly scarce and hard to find, especially in August, when even the budget hotels quickly become fully occupied.

Where to Stay

Many of the budget hotels in Alexandria offer a fairly poor standard of accommodation, with only basic facilities and small rooms, which is of course reflected in the price. Amongst the most popular budget hotels are those edging the coastal Corniche area, where you should always insist on a room with a view of the magnificent Eastern Harbour.

Noteworthy budget hotels in this part of Alexandria are the Hotel Union along the Sharia 26th of July stretch, the Hotel Crillon on the Sharia Adib Ishaq, and also the Hotel Acropole off the Sharia Gamal ad-Din Yassin.

For luxury accommodation, there are plenty of options all around the city and its appealing coastline. Worth searching out is the centrally located Metropole Hotel along the Sharia Saad Zaghloul, which boasts views of both the Mediterranean Sea and the nearby Midan Ramla Square. Nearby, the impressive Cecil Hotel can be found along Alexandria's Midan Saad Zaghloul, part of the Sofitel chain and known for its superb views of the seafront, which are hard to beat. The Cecil Hotel even features its very own highly acclaimed Chinese restaurant.

Other top accommodation options in Alexandria include the Windsor Palace Hotel on Sharia-ash-Shohada, and the Salamlek Palace Hotel within the Montazah Palace Gardens. Also worth a mention is the Green Plaza Hilton Alexandria, which can be found on the 14th of May Bridge at the Green Plaza Shopping Mall, where shops, eateries and a cinema are all close by.
