Most of Richmond's attractions can be seen on foot thanks to the city's fairly compact nature. However, for those harder-to-reach places, the city of Richmond offers a comprehensive bus service and taxi travel is often a popular method of transport.

Situated less than 7 miles / 11 km southeast of downtown is Richmond International Airport, offering frequent connections with other major US centers. Several major carriers operate services to and from Richmond Airport, while there is also a small but comprehensive visitor center in the arrivals terminal building.


With non-stop flights to 22 destinations, it is no surprise that Richmond Airport serves over three million passengers a year. Alternatively, visitors can fly into Washington DC and take a connecting flight or travel by road or rail to Richmond.

Car Rental

Just a two-hour drive along the I-95 from Washington D.C., Richmond is well connected by road. Renting a car is a popular way to travel around the city and as most visitors choose to visit the Historic Triangle on their trip to Richmond, a hire car can be the most economical and convenient way of touring the region. Rental travel outlets are available at Richmond Airport and in the downtown area.

Buses and Coaches

Greyhound operates frequent services to Richmond's outskirts on the I-64, from where alternative transport can be arranged to the city center.

For local journeys, visitors can utilize the GRCT bus services that operate throughout the city and its suburbs. Fares are according to zones and are reasonable in price. A convenient weekend-only bus service is in operation during the summer season on Saturdays and Sundays. The Cultural Connection service links all the city's major attractions including all of its significant museums.

Trains

Amtrak runs rail services to Richmond's new downtown train station, as well as its older rail station, located 5 miles / 8 km from the downtown area. There are regular train services which travel between Richmond and the capital of Washington DC, from where there are plentiful connections to other major centers, such as New York and Philadelphia.

Taxis

Taxis can be found with ease in the city of Richmond and can either be hailed on the curbside or booked in advance via telephone. With several taxi companies in operation, traveling between short distances within the city by taxi is a viable transport option. Taxis are available outside Richmond Airport's terminal and the city's major hotels.
