San Antonio has countless art galleries featuring works by local and international artists. Galleries of varying quality are spread throughout the city of San Antonio, with a noticeable concentration in the La Villita Historic Arts District.

It is possible to purchase striking original pieces at many of the galleries for quite reasonable prices, as well as reproductions and prints. Galleries in the city offer a range of art works in an assortment of mediums, including papier-mâché, stoneware, glass, wood, ceramic and metal. However, if you are just in the mood for some serious art appreciation, then be sure to allocate some time to visit both the Marion Koogler McNay Art Museum on North New Braunfels, and the San Antonio Museum of Art on the West Jones Avenue, the latter of which was established in the early 1980s and is known for its pre-Columbian, Latin American and Spanish Colonial pieces.

The McNay is home to a fine collection of 19th- and 20th-century American and European art, including works by Picasso, Gauguin, Cézanne, O'Keeffe and Hopper. San Antonio's Marion Koogler McNay Art Museum boasts spacious, well-lit galleries and over 14,000 pieces of contemporary art and sculpture, making it one of the best collections in the Southwest. The McNay is set within attractive gardens and contains an excellent research library.

San Antonio Museum of Art

The San Antonio Museum of Art is situated in the magnificent Lone Star Brewery building, on West Jones Avenue and close to the Maverick Park. Housing an exceptionally fine collection of Greek and Roman antiquities, folk art, Asian art and American paintings, the museum also hosts various special events throughout the year, including concerts, guest speakers, lectures and special exhibitions.

Artistic Endeavors features original works by southwestern artists and specializes in paintings, sculptures, silk-screen works, fine art photos and prints. Nearby, you will find La Villita Park, the Hemisfair Park and the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, amongst other places of interest.

Established in 1972, the Village Gallery sells handmade pottery and other handicrafts. The majority of the stoneware and porcelain on sale here is produced by the owners at the McQueeney Pottery in Texas.
